PSG in ‘concrete talks’ to sign £21m star this summer

by FNUK June 25, 2024
written by FNUK

Paris Saint-Germain are reportedly in ‘concrete talks’ to sign Feyenoord star Lutsharel Geertruida this summer, as per the German football expert Florian Plettenberg.

Although Les Parisiens have lost Kylian Mbappe for free, they have saved a huge amount of money and it has been reported that Luis Enrique’s side are looking to invest that to strengthen the squad this summer.

The French giants’ primary objective is to win the Champions League but despite spending a fortune over the last decade, they haven’t been able to achieve that yet.

PSG will be hoping to become Europe’s best despite losing Mbappe next season so they are said to be looking to add reinforcements with Geertruida emerging as a serious option.

Writing on X, Plettenberg has reported that PSG have already opened talks with the player’s representatives to persuade him to join the club and the two parties have been in ‘concrete talks’ in recent days.

PSG looking to sign Geertruida

The journalist further claims that Geertruida’s current contract is set to expire at the end of next season so Feyenoord are ready to let him leave this summer and are prepared to accept a fee of around £21m.

Plettenberg states that clubs from Bundesliga and Premier League have also expressed their interest in signing him but PSG are ‘likely’ to beat their rivals in this race.

Plettenberg wrote:

“There have been concrete talks between Lutsharel Geertruida and Paris Saint-Germain on player’s side! Understand his move to PSG is currently more likely than a move to the Bundesliga or the Premier League. Price valuation for the 23 y/o right back around €25m. Contract with Feyenoord valid until 2025.”

The Netherlands international is comfortable playing in the centre-back position as well as in the right-back role. He is quick, strong, good in the air, comfortable playing out from the back and also excellent in defensive contributions.

He is a talented player and has showcased his qualities for Feyenoord in the Eredivisie in recent years. So, he would be a shrewd acquisition for PSG to reinforce their backline should they acquire his service.

However, it is going to be interesting to see whether Enrique’s side can eventually manage to secure his signature in this transfer window.

Too famous to play football? Ronaldo has outgrown the sport that made him

by Alex Mathews June 24, 2024
written by Alex Mathews

The greatest footballer in the history of football, Ronaldo may have become too big for the ball game that sent him international.

That is the level of fame he has garnered and how it encourages him to engage in the sport, as well as with its fan base.

The Incident in Dortmund

Security guards are seen here man-handling Ronaldo after the game at BVB Stadion Dortmund.

He wore a glittering Portugal tracksuit, he smiled and threw love signs with his hands. Only on closer examination, it was obviously not the true Ronaldo but a mere doppelganger.

This lookalike event was a bizarre happening, with the fake Ronaldo literally trying to take over the real Ronaldo’s life.

Which demonstrates how Ronaldo’s aura has made him something of a planet to the world over in which people can be, or wish to be, part of his orbit.

The Fame Problem

Too famous to play football? Ronaldo has outgrown the sport that made him | Euro 2024 | The Guardian

Ronaldo is so popular that looking similar to him is a profession. These replicas are being taken care of like referential objects.

This demonstrates the degree of influence that Ronaldo exerts and his image is no longer merely that of a footballer. In Dortmund, loyalties were divided.

Ronaldo attracted attention in his own private box, which seems to have been even more interesting for many fans than the game itself.

People were standing up on tiptoes to see him and might have seen IShowSpeed, a well-known YouTuber, in the crowd.

The Impact on Football

This type of focus detracts from the sport itself. They are dangerous and a distraction and pitch invasions or even people striking Emile Heskey was senseless.

Ronaldo is such a huge name now that bodies like Uefa will need to reconsider their protocols. Maybe Ronaldo just, as many superstars do, needs security around him to deal with his adoring masses.

The popularity that Cristiano Ronaldo enjoys has made him a worldwide phenomenon and it is difficult to restrict football within its frontiers. Zero escapes the sport without being touched by him, and that presents a problem.

Since Ronaldo is now both athlete AND celebrity, football needs to wrap its head around the magnificent monster that it constructed. Right now, fans are just eager to play the game without all of this added noise.

Dominik Szoboszlai’s heroic role in helping stricken Barnabas Varga after horrific injury

by Alex Mathews June 24, 2024
written by Alex Mathews

A Tragic Collision

Barnabas Varga had a horrific accident in the match between Hungary and Scotland.

He took a blow to the face by Scotland’s goalkeeper, Angus Gunn accidentally as he jumped for a ball after Dominik Szoboszlai had floated in a free-kick.

Szoboszlai hurried the medics along as they entered the pitch

Szoboszlai to the Rescue

Varga was initially motionless although Szoboszlai frantically beckoned for help. When the first on-scene medics dragged their heels, he even grabbed the stretcher to help them return his injured teammate to the pits more quickly.

It left Szoboszlai in tears as chairs were erected around Varga to shield him from view for treatment.

Medical Update

The facial fractures and the concussion were later confirmed by Hungary coach Marco Rossi.

Varga was stable, but needed to undergo surgery and was ruled out for the rest of the tournament.

Team’s Dedication

That led to visible frustration of Hungary’s players due to the late response of a medical team. ‘Ronald Sallai’, the man of the match, meanwhile vowed to rally around Varga.

He kept the win to their account, underlining solidarity and a special drive in their quest for glory meant for him.

While confirming this, the silencing of the stadium signifies that medical assistance is paramount in sports (including football), and Dominik Szoboszlai exhibited a demonstration of leadership, thinking fast on his feet in an emergency.

How Many Penalties Has Messi Missed | In-Depth Guide 2024

by Alex Mathews June 23, 2024
written by Alex Mathews

Among other achievements and records, star footballer Lionel Messi has enjoyed a glittering career that has seen him lauded as one of the greatest men to ever have graced the sport.

Any athlete will face their fair share of problems, however, such as his penalty record. It is a question that fans and analysts ask, How Many Penalties Has Messi Missed?

This guide, one of the most thorough investigations of his penalties ever produced, goes into assiduous detail about how and why these spot-kicks are going awry.

We will find out in a minute how many times the Argentine hasn’t managed to score from the penalty spot, looking at both high-pressure matters and league games.

Messi’s Overall Penalty Record

Statistics Overview:

  • Total penalties taken: 141
  • Total penalties scored: 109
  • Total penalties missed: 32
  • Conversion rate: 77%

Comparison with Cristiano Ronaldo:

  • Total penalties taken: 167
  • Total penalties scored: 142
  • Total penalties missed: 25
  • Conversion rate: 85%

Analysis of Messi’s Penalty Misses

Club vs. International: Number of Penalties Missed in Each:

If we break Messi’s penalty misses down to club and international levels, we receive some fascinating numbers.

Club Level:

  • Total penalties taken: 111
  • Total penalties scored: 86
  • Total penalties missed: 25
  • Conversion rate: 77.5%

International Level:

  • Total penalties taken: 30
  • Total penalties scored: 23
  • Total penalties missed: 7
  • Conversion rate: 76.7%

Key Matches Where Missed Penalties Had Significant Consequences:

2012 Champions League Semi-Final vs. Chelsea:

In 2012, probably the most memorable of Lionel Messi’s penalty misses was in the second leg of that season’s UEFA Champions League semi-final against Chelsea.

Messi’s penalty hit the crossbar with a place in the final on the line. Barcelona would draw the game eventually 2-2, crashing out the competition, as Chelsea progressed on aggregate.

2016 Copa America Final vs. Chile:

A notable other missed shootout penalty came in the final of the 2016 Copa America Centenario against Chile.

That was made all the worse when Messi sent the ball high over the crossbar in a shootout, with a miss that caused Argentina to lose and keep their wait for another major trophy gradually going on.

2018 World Cup Group Stage vs. Iceland:

After all, Messi already had missed a decisive penalty in Argentina’s opening group-stage match against Iceland at the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

The Iceland keeper stopped his effort but the game finished 1-1 Meanwhile, this miss only spoke to the fairly average performances of Argentina in the group stages as they scraped through to the knockout rounds.

Penalty woes not only hurt Messi and his reputation, they also cost his teams drastically in key games and such results truly underline the weight with which he had missed these critical chances.

Trends in His Penalty-Taking Success and Misses Throughout His Career:

A study of Lionel Messi’s penalties during his aging progress, both in his best and darkest times scoring from the twelve-spot gives a picture of marked peaks and valleys.

Here Messi, in his early years at Barcelona, had displayed very high conversion rates exemplifying the increase of combativity and self-possession. As he went into his peak years of 2010-15, he had become one of the most successful penalty takers in top-flight football, sometimes scoring under pressure in big match moments.

But since 2015, his conversion dipped somewhat in patches or possibly phases when confidence or maybe patterns of a few keepers when it came to their strategies?

There are recurring patterns when looking at his misses. Nonetheless, a small number of misses in a few crucial games where the stakes were real (someone tell these statisticians that finals and knockout stages exist) might still be put down to ultimate pressure.

On the other hand Messi’s confidence appears more unshakeable in normal league matches and lesser important games where his conversion rate tends to be higher.

Impact of Missed Penalties on Messi’s Career

Short-term Consequences:

In the tournaments and games Lionel Messi have played in, missed penalties has instantly contributed to major changes in several outcomes.

As in 2012, when he missed the penalty against Chelsea not only changed the course of that semi-final but also knocked Barcelona out of the final completely.

That miss altered the course of the team in one of football’s best tournaments as it caused a straight hit to their morale and their performance.

Another missed penalty by Messi at the 2016 Copa América Centenario final similarly changed the shootout balance, and Argentina ended up losing.

That led to Messi and Argentina missing out on another international tournament win and instead further enhancing the narrative of close but no cigar that shadowed them at the time.

His missed penalty in the group stage against Iceland in the 2018 World Cup had begun to unravel Argentina’s campaign early on.

The draw meant further group-stage battles for qualification to the knockout rounds, which in turn translated into more pressure on both Messi and the team.

Long-term Reputation:

The missed penalties are now registered as another blot in Lionel Messi’s legacy, a poor reflection not only in the public eye but on the man himself, that one greatest-ever footballer who keeps on falling short when it matters most.

Even though the well-rounded game and many accomplishments of Bryant can often seat him as one of the best players to ever play the game, these missed chances have consistently marred an otherwise brilliant career.

Those performances including the infamous incidents in question are perennially pointed to by critics and detractors as emblematic of what supposed inconsistency occurs when he is put under pressure.

Such has been the nature of the missed penalties that it added to this narrative of Messi being unable to deliver at the big moment, particularly with Argentina, with whom he has failed to win a major tournament.

Penalty misses have cost the Barca living legend his status as the greatest of them all, argue some, given that he cannot boast quite the sort of quote-worthy conversion rate in crucial moments which those contemporaries can Cristiano Ronaldo most significantly.

In addition, however, these misses are repetitive of the kind that can echo in Messi’s head in a penalty situation, such as we saw against Bosnia.

Still, frankly speaking, Messi should deserve recognition as well because up to this point, his durability and consistent match-winning performances have further cemented his status as one of the most iconic players in football history.

Conclusion

Lionel Messi’s career has been full of highs and the odd notable low, with much written about his efforts from 12 yards.

His achievements and contributions in the sport as a whole cannot be denied yet these missed spot-kicks at crucial junctures have given his legacy a lot of layers.

To this date, Messi has failed 29 times to convert from the penalty spot in competitive games among all tournaments, a figure that surprises and is curious for fans as well as various analysts.

These narrative-altering missed opportunities created the question marks that surrounded his clutch ability, particularly in high-pressured scenarios.

But the fact is that even with those missteps, this Messi continues to show fortitude and pure specialness that will have the history books hail him as one of football’s immortals.

Borussia Dortmund closing in on a deal to sign £19m star

by FNUK June 22, 2024
written by FNUK

Borussia Dortmund are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign VfB Stuttgart star Waldemar Anton this summer, as per the German football expert Florian Plettenberg.

The 27-year-old displayed excellent performances last term, helping his side finish second in the Bundesliga ahead of Bayern Munich and as a result, the German side have secured their place in the Champions League next season.

Following his promising displays in the Bundesliga, he has been selected to play for Germany in the European Championship. However, he remained an unused substitute in both of their games.

So, with Dortmund looking to sign a new defender after Mats Hummels’ departure, they have now identified Anton as the primary option.

Writing on X, Plettenberg has reported that BVB were in battle with Bayer Leverkusen over this deal and Xavi Alonso’s side even submitted a contract proposal to the defender to persuade him to move to BayArena, but the 27-year-old has decided to sign for Dortmund.

Dortmund to sign Anton

The journalist further claims that BVB will now trigger Anton’s £19m release clause and the player will sign a contract with them until 2028. However, the date of his medical hasn’t been scheduled yet as he is currently busy with Germany in the European Championship.

Anton, standing at 6ft 3in tall, is a versatile defender as his natural position is centre-back but can also be deployed in the right-back position. He is quick, strong, good in the air, comfortable playing out from the back, efficient in defensive contributions and also reads the game well.

So, he would be an excellent acquisition for Borussia Dortmund as a potential replacement for Hummels. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the German international can replicate the same performance in Signal Iduna Park as he did for Stuttgart last season.

After parting ways with Edin Terzic, the German giants have decided to appoint Nuri Sahin as their new manager. Now, it remains to be seen how they will perform under the former midfielder’s guidance next term.

Barcelona plot swoop to sign £21m star this summer

by FNUK June 19, 2024
written by FNUK

Barcelona are reportedly keen on signing Real Sociedad star Mikel Merino this summer, as per Sport.

Following a disappointing campaign last term, the Blaugrana have decided to appoint Hansi Flick as their new manager after dismissing Xavi Hernandez.

So, it appears the Catalan giants are in the market to reinforce the squad this summer to help the German challenge on fronts next season against a star-studded Real Madrid team.

However, Barcelona are said to be in financial difficulties so they can’t afford to spend big this summer hence, they are seemingly exploring affordable signings at the moment.

The Spanish outlet states that Barcelona are keen on strengthening their engine room and have identified Bruno Guimaraes and Amadou Onana as the primary options.

Barcelona want Merino

However, the report claims the Blaugrana can’t afford to sign any of them so they are now looking to lure Merino from Real Sociedad.

The midfielder has entered the final year of his current contract and hasn’t signed an extension with La Real yet as he is willing to leave the club to take the next step in his career.

Therefore, Real Sociedad could be forced to cash-in on him in a cut-price deal this summer and could accept a fee of around £21m. So, this is a huge boost for Barcelona in pursuit of the Spain international.

However, Marca (via Sport) has recently reported that Atletico Madrid have also expressed their interest in signing Marino, hence Flick’s side are set to face stiff competition in getting any potential deal done for him.

The Real Sociedad star is a top-class player and has already showcased his qualities in the Spanish top-flight over the last few years. As a result, he is now a regular member of the Spanish national team.

So, the 27-year-old would be a great coup for Barcelona should they acquire his service. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Catalan giants can eventually manage to lure him in this summer window.

If you stack those fields side-by-side and end-to-end, you have a playing area that is 100 yards long (300 feet) and 160 wide, making a total area of 48,000 square feet.

Each end zone goes an extra 10 yards (30 feet) in length, which amounts to 6,000 square feet per end zone. Thus, the end zone area is 12, 000 square feet when the two are added together.

This full size is necessary to control the game, make certain that there is enough area for the major activity in play and to keep the players secure.

As a result, knowing about these dimensions helps in giving us an expanded view on the complexity of football strategy that takes place on the gridiron.

Standardization of Football Field Sizes

Football fields were not always standardized in size. That led to a more varied gameplay, as fields varied during the start of the sport.

This was absolutely paramount in how the sport has now evolved in creating universally adopted rules and regulations wherever it is practiced.

Standardization meant that fans could whether it was in Manchester, Leeds or London the understanding of the game was the same and could be enjoyed easily.

Comparison of UK Football Fields

American football fields are more standardized, the field sizes for sports in the UK where they play underwater rugby (or as they call it, soccer) are, of course, a little different (their foot is smaller than our foot), but the area of the fields are unique.

UK Football (Soccer) Fields

Typically, a regular UK football (soccer) field is up to 100-130 yards (300-390 feet) long and 50-100 yards (150-300 feet) wide.

The ergonomic modular design of the field and goals offers almost unlimited combinations and makes it possible to adapt the size of the field optimally to all types of ground and kind of sport.

For international games, the restrictions may be more harsh with length frequently being 110-120 yards (330-360 feet) and width 70-80 yards (210-240 feet).

Rugby Fields

However, rugby fields are standardized. Normally, a rugby pitch is bigger than a football field, which is around 330 feet (100 meters) in length and 230 feet (70 meters) in width.

There are also in-goal areas which are up to 10-22 metres (32-72 ft) deep at each end of the field, thus increasing the total length of the playing area.

It also is big enough to accommodate the dynamic and physical nature of Rugby Union, with room for open play and various tactical formations.

Comparison

When we compare these fields, it is easy to notice that although each sport has its own requirements, soccer fields, more than any other one, can have many different configurations, according to the level of the game or possible available area.

Compared to American football, rugby fields are quite spacious, allowing for sole game and team play.

Whereas, standardization in American football fields guarantees standardized playing environments in each level of play, from high school to professional leagues.

Recognising these differences highlights the in variety design in sportsfield and the technique used by each sport to utilise space maximum for play.

The Role of Football Field Dimensions

The following dimensions are hugely influential in how football is played.

The wide field allows for varied offensive and defensive play in American football. Coaches and players alike have to be aware of the size of the field and the paths they can possibly navigate safely.

A larger field make a long pass more successful; league you will run the ball on a narrower field to better use passing lanes.

At the same time, the size of a soccer field or rugby field also dictates the speed and nature of the game, larger fields offering scope for more strategic movement and smaller fields fostering direct play with physicality.

Maintenance and Turf Management

Taking care of a full-blown football field is not a small deal.

Groundskeepers pay meticulous attention to keeping the grass, well, grass, as lush as possible through the season. This means consistent mowing, watering, and fertilizing to build strong, hearty growth.

The gym is repaired immediately with special care generated from games and practices although artificial turf fields are lower maintenance than natural grass fields, they do require cleaning and it is important to replace the infill.

Regular maintenance not only improves the look of the field, but ensures the safety of players and playing conditions.

Impact of Weather and Environmental Factors

On top of that, the condition of a football field can be affected by weather and other environmental conditions.

The worst thing about heavy rain for players is that it can turn a perfectly good grass field into a muddy, soggy mess which can rob players of their footing.

Or, on the other extreme, too much heat can desiccate the turf and make it brittle and easy to rupture.

Groundskeepers must be on top of weather reports and take preventative measures to minimize damage to the field.

This includes using tarpaulins during heavy showers or irrigation systems during dry seasons to keep the field in good shape.

Conclusion

A football field is necessary to understand for any aspiring footballer beyond mere curiosity.

It also gives an understanding of the strategic nuances of the contest, the value of pitch management, as well as the studying of environmental challenges.

Because if you are or want to be a player, coach or fan, you always should know the size of the field on which it is played and then you can appreciate it as a whole game with factors.

Now, you will have a whole new appreciation for the area where all of the action takes place the next time you watch a game.

Bayern Munich in ‘direct contact’ to sign £50m star

by FNUK June 15, 2024
written by FNUK

Bayern Munich are reportedly in ‘direct contact’ with Fulham over a deal to sign Joao Palhinha this summer, as per the transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Following a disappointing campaign last term, the Bavarian club dismissed Thomas Tuchel. They went for numerous candidates to replace the German but eventually decided to appoint Vincent Kompany.

Therefore, the record German champions will kickstart a new era under the former Burnley boss’ guidance from next campaign. Bayern Munich have already started their summer businesses to strengthen the squad and have purchased Hiroki Ito.

However, it seems they are also plotting a swoop to sign a new holding midfielder with Joao Palhinha being their priority target. The Portuguese was heavily linked with a move to the Bavarian club last summer but the deal eventually didn’t come to fruition.

Bayern Munich want Palhinha

But, it seems they are now looking to acquire his service ahead of next season. Palhinha has reportedly agreed on personal terms with Bayern Munich and the price tag of the midfielder is expected to be around £34m-£42m.

Now, Romano states that Bayern Munich remain in ‘direct contact’ with Fulham having already seen two bids rejected by the English club. The Italian didn’t mention the exact valuation of their first two bids but he claims that although the Bundesliga giant haven’t been able to seal the deal, Palhinha feels an agreement will be reached over the coming days.

Romano said:

“Bayern and Fulham remain in direct contact for João Palhinha despite no agreement yet on the fee. Second bid sent on Tuesday has been rejected but the plan doesn’t change, Bayern want Palhinha and he fully expects to get the green light. Talks ongoing.”

The Portuguese displayed impressive performances in the Premier League having moved to Craven Cottage a few years ago. He is a regular member of Portugal national team so he would be a great coup for Bayern should they acquire his service.

Therefore, it is going to be interesting to see how Palhinha performs in the Bundesliga if he eventually manage to engineer a move to the Allianz Arena in this transfer window.

German police admit to ‘blind spot’ over possible violence at England v Serbia

by Alex Mathews June 15, 2024
written by Alex Mathews

German police are worried there could be violence at the Euro 2024 game between England and Serbia.

The game on Sunday evening in Gelsenkirchen was classified as ‘high risk.

A New Generation of Fans

Police chief Peter Both said there is a blind spot in the knowledge of how the current England fans act 2020 will have proved to be a gap year between Euro 2016 and, who knows, Euro 2024.

The children who have discovered soccer during those few weeks three summers ago are by now 24 or so and experiencing their first nostalgia.

The pair both said, “It basically means it is hard for us to predict what will happen.

Extra Safety Measures

German police are using a special vehicle because of the risk involved.

One such measure is that only low-alcohol beer is being served in the Veltins-Arena, home to Schalke.

The choice is a measure intended to limit rowdiness in the stands.

Both also reported that though the FA were allocated 10,000 tickets, closer to 20,000 have been taken in total by England fans, with over 30,000 headed to the city.

With up to 10,000 Serbian fans also expected to travel to the match, it could prove to be a major headache for police

History of Hooliganism

Football hooliganism is well documented in both England and Serbia.

English domestic leagues seem to have suffered a bit more owing to disorder in recent years.

There were 1,624 football banning orders in place as of last summer, up 24 per cent on the 2012 figure.

Those affected had to give up their passports to stop them from going to games in Germany.

Either way, both have fears that as many as 500 ‘violence-seeking’ Serbian hooligans could still head for Gelsenkirchen.

But he acknowledged authorities still do not have a clear understanding.

Keeping Calm and Enjoying the Game

A general warning has also been issued asking people to refrain from posting unverified information on social media.

Allegations of violence and attacks on the Serbian team were among the best unfounded claims.

For England supporters without tickets, there will be a fan zone at a racecourse, where 80,000 liters of beer and 32,000 sausages will be sold.

The bottom line, according to police: Game on, but keep it cool and keep everyone safe.
