The greatest footballer in the history of football, Ronaldo may have become too big for the ball game that sent him international.

That is the level of fame he has garnered and how it encourages him to engage in the sport, as well as with its fan base.

The Incident in Dortmund

Security guards are seen here man-handling Ronaldo after the game at BVB Stadion Dortmund.

He wore a glittering Portugal tracksuit, he smiled and threw love signs with his hands. Only on closer examination, it was obviously not the true Ronaldo but a mere doppelganger.

This lookalike event was a bizarre happening, with the fake Ronaldo literally trying to take over the real Ronaldo’s life.

Which demonstrates how Ronaldo’s aura has made him something of a planet to the world over in which people can be, or wish to be, part of his orbit.

The Fame Problem

Ronaldo is so popular that looking similar to him is a profession. These replicas are being taken care of like referential objects.

This demonstrates the degree of influence that Ronaldo exerts and his image is no longer merely that of a footballer. In Dortmund, loyalties were divided.

Ronaldo attracted attention in his own private box, which seems to have been even more interesting for many fans than the game itself.

People were standing up on tiptoes to see him and might have seen IShowSpeed, a well-known YouTuber, in the crowd.

The Impact on Football

This type of focus detracts from the sport itself. They are dangerous and a distraction and pitch invasions or even people striking Emile Heskey was senseless.

Ronaldo is such a huge name now that bodies like Uefa will need to reconsider their protocols. Maybe Ronaldo just, as many superstars do, needs security around him to deal with his adoring masses.

The popularity that Cristiano Ronaldo enjoys has made him a worldwide phenomenon and it is difficult to restrict football within its frontiers. Zero escapes the sport without being touched by him, and that presents a problem.

Since Ronaldo is now both athlete AND celebrity, football needs to wrap its head around the magnificent monster that it constructed. Right now, fans are just eager to play the game without all of this added noise.
