Newcastle 0-1 Aston Villa was a landmark night for Unai Emery. Johan Manzambi’s first-half header earned a 1-0 win at St James’ Park, and it was Villa’s second league win of the season. The Spaniard’s side then held firm through a tense second half to give him his 100th Premier League win. As a result, Villa now sit on eight points, level with their hosts in a congested middle of the table.
The decisive moment in Newcastle 0-1 Aston Villa came nine minutes before half-time. Manzambi then rose to head home Joao Gomes’ delivery and silence the majority of the 52,626 inside St James’ Park. Newcastle had their spells either side of the interval, yet they could not break down a disciplined Villa rearguard. As the second half wore on, the visitors’ organisation told.

Newcastle 0-1 Aston Villa: what it means for Emery
For Emery, this win also carries personal significance. Indeed, three figures of Premier League victories puts him in select company. The result also came the way his sides like it: patient, compact and clinical. His team rarely looked flustered, even as Newcastle pushed for an equaliser late on. However, that resilience had been missing in a start that brought one win from their first six games.
After the Newcastle Aston Villa final whistle, the home side will feel this was an opportunity missed. However, Matthias Jaissle’s team trailed at the break despite long periods of pressure. Instead, they could not turn territory into clear chances, and the final whistle brought frustration on Tyneside. So two wins from seven is a return well below the club’s ambitions, and the search for a statement result continues.
After this Newcastle Aston Villa result, both clubs sit on eight points ahead of next week’s fixtures. Meanwhile, Villa, who drew 2-2 with Brentford a week earlier, hope this evening proves the turning point in their season. Newcastle, however, must regroup before another demanding test.
