Iraola points to set-piece errors after Liverpool defeat at Fenerbahce

Andoni Iraola said Liverpool had to defend set-pieces better after their 3-2 Champions League defeat at Fenerbahce. They surrendered the lead twice on Wednesday.

The head coach pointed to the way all three goals were conceded in Istanbul, rather than his decision to make five changes to the starting side.

Trey Nyoni and substitute Alexander Isak put Liverpool ahead in either half. Mason Greenwood and Archie Brown equalised before Vedat Muriqi headed the winner.

Iraola identifies Liverpool’s set-piece problem

Speaking in his post-match press conference, published by Liverpool, Iraola said: “The main reason I can find to lose the game is we conceded [from] three set-pieces.”

He said Liverpool knew Fenerbahce’s strength in those situations but still conceded following a free-kick, a corner and a throw-in.

Greenwood’s free-kick took a deflection to bring the hosts level in the first half. Brown then scored after a short corner, before Muriqi’s header completed the turnaround.

“They are goals that have hurt us because we have twice gone in front after having good moments, controlling the game, arriving,” Iraola said. “We found the goals. But after, we conceded in situations that we definitely should defend better.”

Five changes were not the main reason

Iraola defended the rotation, saying Liverpool had regularly made several changes for midweek matches because of their schedule. He said some of the players brought into the team had performed well.

His concern was how quickly the leads disappeared and the defensive mistakes, rather than a lack of attacking opportunities.

The Liverpool boss also explained that Isak’s planned involvement was around 30 minutes. The striker scored with his first touch after arriving from the bench, heading in Cody Gakpo’s cross. The advantage did not last.

The defeat ended Liverpool’s perfect start to the Champions League league phase. Iraola said his team had worked extensively on defending set-plays and had handled them well in the league, making the goals in Istanbul particularly frustrating.

Liverpool had progressed in their previous midweek cup match, beating Chelsea on penalties to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.
