The Arsenal injury update rules Piero Hincapie and Martin Zubimendi out of Tuesday’s Champions League match against Lille after both suffered injuries in a planned training session following Saturday’s win over Leeds United.
Mikel Arteta confirmed the Arsenal injury update on Monday, confirming that both players hurt an ankle and needed further scans before the club could establish how long they would be out. He described Hincapie’s problem as looking “a little bit more serious”, but said Arsenal would have to wait for more information.
Arsenal injury update rules pair out of Lille match
Both players had been on the bench for the 2-1 victory over Leeds, with Hincapie coming on in the 80th minute. They then took part in a post-match session on the Emirates Stadium pitch.
Arteta said the session had been planned for players who had not played enough minutes, allowing them to maintain their rhythm before Sunday’s recovery day.
“They’re both going to miss tomorrow’s match, that’s for sure, and today they’re going to have a further scan and probably tomorrow we’ll know more.”
Scans needed before recovery times are clear
Arteta said both players injured an ankle, but the Arsenal injury update does not provide a return date for either. Arteta said two unfortunate incidents had left the club needing to assess the pair.
Asked about avoiding such injuries, he defended the reasoning behind the session. He said small-sided games involve contact and that players need the right workload to be ready when called upon.
The injuries happened after the Leeds match, not during it. Their confirmed absence relates to Tuesday’s European fixture; the length of either lay-off remains unresolved.
Arsenal injury update includes Saliba progress
William Saliba has been doing individual work on grass as he builds towards a return. Arteta said the defender’s capacity was improving, but that Arsenal were still talking about weeks before he could become available.
The manager did not commit to a return before or after the November international break, explaining that the healing process still needed to be monitored.
