Liverpool hit six at LASK as Barcola scores hat-trick

by Alex Matthews

Liverpool won 6-3 at LASK as Bradley Barcola scored a hat-trick in Wednesday’s Champions League meeting at Raiffeisen Arena.

Ronald Araujo, Jeremie Frimpong and Lewis Koumas also scored for Andoni Iraola’s side. The victory gave the Reds six points from their opening two league-phase matches.

Liverpool take control before half-time

Araujo opened the scoring by heading in Kostas Tsimikas’ corner. Barcola then scored his first goal for the club after Rio Ngumoha’s run and a pass from Koumas.

The visitors kept creating chances. Koumas had a goal ruled out for offside and Ryan Gravenberch struck the inside of the post before Barcola added his second, combining with Florian Wirtz.

Liverpool led 3-0 at the break. The club also reported that their 19 first-half shots were an away-team Champions League record in Opta’s records dating from 2003-04.

Frimpong made it 4-0 in the 51st minute, heading in Tsimikas’ cross at the back post. After LASK replied through Robert Ljubicic, Barcola completed his hat-trick from Frimpong’s low delivery.

Koumas then scored his first Champions League goal to put Liverpool 6-1 ahead. He finished from close range after another Frimpong cross, having earlier seen two efforts disallowed for offside.

LASK kept attacking and Florian Flecker scored twice late on. Those goals reduced the margin but did not prevent the Reds from securing the points.

Six points from two matches

Iraola made four changes, bringing in Tsimikas, Frimpong, Trey Nyoni and Ngumoha. Tsimikas captained the starting side.

The result followed Liverpool’s opening Champions League victory over Atletico Madrid. Their next game in the competition is at home to Villarreal on Tuesday.
