Liverpool: Ronald Araujo decision not until 2027 and midfield plans, says Romano

by Alex Matthews

Ronald Araujo will not get a decision on his Liverpool future this winter, and the club are keeping an eye on midfield without any rush. That is the picture Fabrizio Romano painted in his latest YouTube video, as covered by FootballTransfers on Tuesday.

Ronald Araujo: a smart signing, with no decision yet

Romano called the loan from Barcelona a “very smart signing”. Liverpool did not pay a loan fee, but they are covering Araujo’s whole salary, which was very large at Barcelona. Ronald Araujo can play centre-back or right-back, he is a leader, and Romano says he is studying English and is “very happy” at Anfield. Liverpool hold a €55 million option to buy, which is not mandatory.

Romano said Ronald Araujo told the press it is “too early” and that he does not know what will happen. Romano added that Liverpool will decide in 2027 and, he is told, not in December or January either. “They are not being forced by anyone to make a decision before they are ready,” he said, so the option sits there for summer 2027.

Midfield in 2027

Away from Ronald Araujo, Romano said Liverpool want to add midfielders in 2027, “players who can be starters or future starters”, and that Andoni Iraola is part of those conversations. Whether that happens in January or next summer depends on the opportunity: if the right one comes in January, Liverpool will be ready to try, otherwise it will be the summer, Romano said.

Beyond Ronald Araujo, two names came up. Liverpool are following Lamine Camara, and Romano says they are the leading side for him now after Chelsea’s deal collapsed on deadline day because of the domino effect involving Monaco. On Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, he said Liverpool made calls at the end of June and the start of July but never made a bid, unlike Chelsea, whose bid was rejected.

What it means

All of this is Romano’s reporting, not a Liverpool announcement. The useful points for supporters are that Ronald Araujo’s permanent move is not a winter story, and that a midfield addition is being discussed for January or the summer, with no fee or player agreed.
