Jacob Murphy’s late goal was not enough to give Newcastle victory at Fulham, with Rodrigo Muniz replying three minutes later to secure a 1-1 draw at Craven Cottage on Saturday.
Murphy put the visitors ahead in the 80th minute with a curling left-footed finish, but substitute Muniz levelled in the 83rd. Both goalkeepers then made important saves as the match finished with chances at either end.
It left Matthias Jaissle’s side with a point after an improved display following their successive defeats against Everton. Newcastle had also seen a first-half Dan Burn effort ruled out before the two late goals.
Fulham 1-1 Newcastle: late goals settle the contest
Newcastle’s breakthrough came after Murphy collected a loose Fulham pass and drove forward. Cutting in from the right, he sent his shot beyond Bernd Leno and into the far corner to put the visitors within reach of an away win.
The lead did not last. Muniz, introduced from the bench, finished from close range after a scramble near the six-yard box, bringing Fulham level with seven minutes of normal time remaining.
There was still time for either side to take all three points. Lewis Hall threatened with his right foot, forcing Leno into a save, before Lukáš Horníček kept out a powerful Ryan Sessegnon effort in added time.
Burn goal ruled out before the break
Fulham had created the early danger, with Malick Thiaw cutting out an Oscar Bobb cross and Horníček turning away a curling Bobb effort. Gonzalo García then headed over from the resulting corner.
Newcastle responded through Harvey Barnes, who twice found Leno in his way. On the second occasion, the goalkeeper blocked with his head after Barnes had run on to a pass from Will Osula.
From the corner that followed, Newcastle worked the ball short before Murphy crossed for Burn to finish. The goal was disallowed for a foul by Yoane Wissa on Timothy Castagne.
Horníček was needed again before half-time to save Josh King’s volley. After the interval, Newcastle pushed forward, with Barnes shooting narrowly wide and Wissa finding the side-netting after a counter-attack.
Four Newcastle changes and returning substitutes

Jaissle had made four changes to his starting side. Thiaw, Sean Steur, Murphy and Wissa came in, while Joelinton missed out through injury.
Lewis Miley, Tino Livramento and Matias Fernandez-Pardo were all back among the substitutes. Miley and Joe Willock entered just after the hour, with Fernandez-Pardo following in the 74th minute.
Leno spilled a Willock shot with 12 minutes left but recovered before Osula could reach the rebound. Murphy’s goal then appeared to have settled the contest, only for Fulham’s response to leave Newcastle unable to turn their pressure into a win.
