Manchester United persevered and defeated Southampton with a score of 3-1 and who was eager to shine, Amad Diallo. The Red Devils started slowly in the match, suffering a self-scored goal but thankfully Amad Diallo managed to pull through and redeem the team, earning them 3 much-needed points.
Even after the victory, Ruben Amorim will still have some doubts regarding the team’s overall consistency.
Andre Onana – 8/10
The United goalkeeper ensured that his team remained in the match after twenty minutes of play by making an astonishing double save. Even though he conceded a goal himself, he showed impressive reflexes throughout the game, further demonstrating his considerable skill.
Leny Yoro – 2/10
Yoro faced a lot of difficulties with Sulemana’s pace which ultimately led to him having an off day. He made a lot of mistakes, simply because he lacked the confidence to perform well as a defender.
Matthijs de Ligt – 5/10
The Dutch defender managed a handful of decent tackles and clearances, but once again he failed to deliver on what was expected of him. His performance had a degree of assuredness to it, but it was by no means authoritative.
Lisandro Martinez – 4/10
Martinez was rather average in this game as it was unlike his usual self. He didn’t seem to be sharp and he couldn’t be on the defensive side of things so he must’ve been a bit out of it.
Amad Diallo – 9/10
Diallo was the star of the night and he never shied away from trying to help United out. He finally got his goal after his initial cross deflected off a defender into the net followed by two power-packed strikes to score his hat trick. Definitely an eye-catching show that deserves all the accolades.
Noussair Mazraoui – 5/10
Mazraoui struggled offensively to contribute to the team when playing out of position on the left, clearly feeling discomfort which restricted United from fully showcasing their attacking potential.
Manuel Ugarte – 5.5/10
There was some bad luck that caused Southampton to score first, but Ugarte did put in some effort in midfield. However, I think he can do better.
Kobbie Mainoo – 4/10
The kid was easily outperformed by the Southampton offence and lost a great opportunity to score. Replaced at half-time for tactical reasons.
Bruno Fernandes – 4/10
A very disappointing game from the captain who could not continue the form he has shown recently. His passing was lackadaisical while his decision-making was also not as sharp.
Alejandro Garnacho – 4/10
Garnacho’s early chances were squandered during a crucial time period which affected the overall flow of the game. He was able to demonstrate moments of greatness but fell short at the end.
Rasmus Hojlund – 2/10
Notably, Hojlund did not do much in this match, nor did the fans have much to cheer about. He showed no intention or ability to take any duels, and neither was he able to hold up play.
Substitutes
Antony – 3/10
Came on at halftime but failed to deliver. A missed chance summed up his struggles, and he’s yet to prove his value to the team.
Joshua Zirkzee – 7/10
Zirkzee came off the bench as the injection of impact that was required. He combined well with other players in assisting United to perform better in the second half of the game.
Toby Collyer – 6/10
Provided some additional sparkle in midfield and put in some solid work with his distributions as well. A decent substitute performance.
Harry Maguire – 5.5/10
Although Maguire was a little bit jumpy at times, he did quite well in securing the defence. Moving forward he might prove to be a pivotal figure.
Christian Eriksen – 7/10
Eriksen’s insight into the game and his extensive knowledge shone brilliantly, providing Amad with a masterclass on how to score goals, resulting in United being on the front foot.
While Diallo’s hat-trick did help Manchester United in securing all three points, one cannot deny that the team’s overall performance was not very great. Defensive issues and underperforming players are just the tip of the iceberg, United have a lot more problems and so does their manager Ruben Amorim.
