Borussia Dortmund are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign VfB Stuttgart star Waldemar Anton this summer, as per the German football expert Florian Plettenberg.
The 27-year-old displayed excellent performances last term, helping his side finish second in the Bundesliga ahead of Bayern Munich and as a result, the German side have secured their place in the Champions League next season.
Following his promising displays in the Bundesliga, he has been selected to play for Germany in the European Championship. However, he remained an unused substitute in both of their games.
So, with Dortmund looking to sign a new defender after Mats Hummels’ departure, they have now identified Anton as the primary option.
Writing on X, Plettenberg has reported that BVB were in battle with Bayer Leverkusen over this deal and Xavi Alonso’s side even submitted a contract proposal to the defender to persuade him to move to BayArena, but the 27-year-old has decided to sign for Dortmund.
Dortmund to sign Anton
The journalist further claims that BVB will now trigger Anton’s £19m release clause and the player will sign a contract with them until 2028. However, the date of his medical hasn’t been scheduled yet as he is currently busy with Germany in the European Championship.
Anton, standing at 6ft 3in tall, is a versatile defender as his natural position is centre-back but can also be deployed in the right-back position. He is quick, strong, good in the air, comfortable playing out from the back, efficient in defensive contributions and also reads the game well.
So, he would be an excellent acquisition for Borussia Dortmund as a potential replacement for Hummels. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the German international can replicate the same performance in Signal Iduna Park as he did for Stuttgart last season.
After parting ways with Edin Terzic, the German giants have decided to appoint Nuri Sahin as their new manager. Now, it remains to be seen how they will perform under the former midfielder’s guidance next term.
