Brentford 1-2 Liverpool: Isak and Munoz complete comeback against nine-man Bees

by Alex Matthews

Liverpool came from behind to beat nine-man Brentford 2-1 at the Gtech Community Stadium. Second-half goals from Victor Munoz and Alexander Isak overturned Keane Lewis-Potter’s opener. The afternoon turned on a controversial first-half red card. The Brentford 1-2 Liverpool comeback gets Andoni Iraola’s side back on track after last weekend’s home defeat to Manchester City. A late fitness question had shaped the build-up, as previewed here.

Brentford 1-2 Liverpool: Red card turns the game

Brentford were good value for their half-time lead. Lewis-Potter struck in the 44th minute, finishing from Igor Thiago’s assist. The home crowd went into the break dreaming of another famous result against one of the division’s heavyweights. The complexion of the afternoon changed dramatically in the eighth minute of first-half stoppage time. Referee John Brooks showed Yehor Yarmoliuk a red card for a headbutting action on Jeremy Jacquet. The hosts faced the entire second half a man down.

Liverpool made their advantage count after the interval. Munoz levelled on 62 minutes with a left-foot finish from Florian Wirtz’s pass. Eight minutes later Isak struck from Bradley Barcola’s ball, and the visitors led for the first time. Brentford’s frustrations grew in stoppage time when Vitaly Janelt collected a second yellow card for a foul on Rio Ngumoha. The hosts finished with nine men as the game slipped away from them.

The Brentford 1-2 Liverpool scoreline will feel harsh on Keith Andrews’ side. Their organised first-half display had Liverpool contained until the dismissal changed everything. For the visitors, the second-half response restores momentum ahead of the next round of fixtures. It follows their six-goal European win at LASK in midweek.

What comes next for the Bees

Brentford must now reflect on what might have been. The Bees face a spell without Yarmoliuk and Janelt through suspension, at a demanding point in their season. The manner of the defeat will sting, given how the afternoon turned on one moment of controversy.
