Everton sale: Friedkin Group explores selling controlling stake

by Alex Matthews

An Everton sale is now a live possibility after owners The Friedkin Group (TFG) said on Friday 9th October that they are exploring “new investment options” for the club, “including the potential sale of a controlling interest”.

The statement does not name a buyer and does not say a deal is done. According to BBC Sport, TFG completed its takeover of Everton in 2024 in a deal it reports as worth more than £400m.

What the Everton sale statement says

TFG says the club faced “significant financial uncertainty” when it took over. Its priority was to provide stability, investment and support, including helping to bring the new stadium to completion. With that foundation in place, the statement says, “the time is right to consider the next chapter for Everton”.

The Everton sale statement adds that the group will “only entertain interest from parties who we strongly believe will be the right stewards to take the club forward”. Sky Sports reports that Dan Friedkin’s group took full ownership in December 2024, ending Farhad Moshiri’s long spell at the helm.

What the Everton sale does not confirm

Both reports describe an Everton sale as something the owners are exploring, not a decision. Neither says an offer exists, that a buyer has emerged, or that the sale will go ahead. A potential sale of a controlling interest could take different forms, and TFG has not said which it prefers.

TFG also says its focus is unchanged while it explores any Everton sale. It says it will keep supporting the club “in all ways necessary to achieve success on the pitch”. It adds that TFG and the club will not comment further while this work is under way.

Why this matters to supporters

Ownership changes at a Premier League club affect more than the boardroom, and any Everton sale would be no different. Supporters will want to know who the next owners could be, how they would fund the club and what it means for the stadium and the squad. Nobody has answered any of that yet.

For now, the Everton sale position stays limited to the owners’ own words: they are exploring a possible sale and will say more only when there is something to report. We will update this report if either side confirms further details. The stadium at the centre of the owners’ statement also featured in our Brennan Johnson VAR decision report.
