Manchester United’s season got underway last Saturday with a narrow defeat to Manchester City in the Community Shield.
However, the team did display potential with fans eager to see new additions arrive.
Of the high-profile players said to be on their way at Old Trafford, perhaps one of them is Matthijs De Ligt, but another name thrown into the mix recently was Sander Berge.
Sander Berge: A Talent but Not a Game-Changer?
The Norwegian midfielder, Sander Berge has also been recently touted as a Manchester United transfer target.
Now Berge is obviously a good player, but the feeling amongst others that he might not be exactly what we need to push on.
His performance has been solid, but many believe there are better options available.
Youssouf Fofana: A More Impressive Option
Recent reports suggest that Manchester United are now focusing on Youssouf Fofana from AS Monaco.
Football Insider claim that ten Hag is eager to recruit a midfielder this summer, and Fofana has caught the eye at Monaco.
Although Fofana is also eyeing a switch to Italian giants AC Milan, Odd tells us United will have to respond with a convincing bid if they want his signature.
Why Fofana Stands Out
Fofana has been brilliant with Monaco based on his abilities. Last season, managed 35 appearances and grabbed four goals and made another four assists.
This means he produced a goal or assist every 4.37 matches. In contrast, Sander Berge scored just two goals and made two assists in 40 appearances for Burnley, averaging a goal or assist every ten games.
The Cost and the Decision
Fofana would reportedly cost up to £30m in transfer fees. As substantial a sum as it is, plenty think Fofana would still be worth more than Berge’s signing.
All of which combine to validate him as a worthwhile addition for Manchester United. It is further said that it would be a wise investment by United if they could land Fofana for the amount, as he clearly boosts their midfield significantly.
Youssouf Fofana is amongst the best targets for Manchester United as they look to bolster their squad. His impressive performances for AS Monaco and his ability to contribute both defensively and offensively make him a more appealing option than Sander Berge.
At £30m, Fofana may not be cheap but he is good value for money for United and appears to fit the profile they are looking at. If the club could bring him in, it should prove a major boost to their chances of an ultimately successful season under Erik ten Hag.
