Chelsea have reportedly agreed on a deal in principle with FC Basel to sign Renato Veiga this summer, as per the transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.

The Blues have been busy in this transfer window as they have already purchased Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, in addition, they have sealed the deal for in-demand Brazilian youngster Estevao Willian, but he won’t be joining before next summer.

It seems Chelsea also wanted to bolster their backline by signing a new left-footed defender and initially registered their interest in Riccardo Calafiori of Bologna.

However, Arsenal are closing in on a deal to sign the Italian after agreeing on personal terms with him. So, after finding it hard to lure Calafiori to Stamford Bridge, the West London club have decided to move quickly and sign Veiga from Basel.

Writing on X, Romano has reported that Chelsea have agreed on a deal with the Swiss club to sign the Portuguese and they’ll pay a fee of around £12m[€14m]. No bonuses or sell-on clauses have been included in this deal.

Chelsea seal Veiga deal

The journalist further claims that the 20-year-old will sign a long-term contract with Chelsea until 2032 and he will now undergo medical before the deal gets finalised.

Romano wrote:

“Renato Veiga, set to undergo medical as new Chelsea player. Portuguese talent to sign contract valid until June 2032. Chelsea will pay €14m to Basel and there will be no add-ons or sell-on. Veiga could also play as fullback in Chelsea plans. Exclusive story, confirmed.”

The youngster, standing at 6ft 2in tall, is a left-footed defender – who can play in the centre-back position as well as in the left-back role. Additionally, he can provide cover in the engine room if required.

The 20-year-old is quick and extremely comfortable with the ball at his feet. He also can dribble past opposition defenders in tight areas and is efficient in defensive contributions.

Veiga is a highly talented player and could be an excellent bargain acquisition for Chelsea, hence, it remains to be seen how the youngster performs in the Premier League next season.
